A spectacular engineering feat, about which its chief engineer said, “There have been higher bridges not so long, and longer bridges not so high, but taking the length and height together, this is, perhaps, the largest bridge in the world.” High Bridge played a pivotal role in the last days of the Civil War, as Union troops pursued the remnants of the Confederate army to Appomattox.
